Most of the Carpenters are of a quiet, unassuming, uncomplaining disposition - always ready to support any good work.

Interesting to note a common virtue among the men in the family - always showing kindness and thoughtful concern to their companions and children.

Ora Carpenter Omerza journal, October 3-22, 1981

3 October 1981

Today was the first day of General Conference. With the marvels of Science we were able to see and hear all sessions. I went to the Stake Center and listened to the morning sessions. I went to the morning session. In between the morning and afternoon sessions they had the women’s conference on. I had heard it was great to be able to see it. Then I watched the afternoon session. We missed Pres. Kimball being there but it was a very inspirational Conference. I was amazed to see Pres. Tanner taking charge of the morning session. He had been quite ill. Gordon B. Hinckley was sustained as a counselor in the first Presidency and Neal A. Maxwell was sustained as an apostle.

Today I went to Ted and Nancy’s and watched the General Conference as they could get it on their T.V. Again it was an inspiring Conference. Between the morning and the afternoon sessions we saw the Priesthood session. It was so wonderful to be able to see and feel a part of these great conferences. It was such a good day for me. I enjoy being with all my children but this was a special day being with Ted and Nancy, Jennifer and Jeremy. The children are such a delight. After the conference we sat out in their back yard and visited. The weather was just beautiful. A very lovely day.

Today I helped Nancy tie a quilt. She put it up at Madge’s because she has room for it. It was a cover for Jeremy’s new bed and it had animals, etc. on it. It looked nice when we got it finished. It was a good day. Working and visiting with Nancy and Madge and the children.

The rest of the week was rather routine. I spent some time studying for my Relief Society lesson.

11 Oct 1981

Today was my Relief Society lesson. We changed the time of our meetings. We have Sacrament meeting at 11:30 a.m. and Relief Society at 1:30 p.m. Our lesson was on Teaching by the Spirit. I had done quite a bit of studying and preparing for this lesson. If I didn’t have the Spirit how could I teach others to teach by the Spirit. I felt the Spirit with me in what I said. I had several good comments on it.

The rest of the week was routine. Friday, Oct 16th was Ted’s birthday. They wanted to come to me and have dinner and the birthday cake. But at the last minute Ted had to work so we . . . (Oct 17th) postponed it until Saturday the 19th. They came about three o’clock and we cooked steaks out on the grill. (Ted did the cooking) We had a lovely dinner and cake and ice cream. Then we just visited. It’s so good to have the children come. I get so lonesome. Ted was 25. I can’t believe my youngest child being that old. I am so proud of him and the progress he is making in his life, both spiritual and otherwise. Nancy is so good for him.

20 Oct 1981

Today I took the car into Randalls in Mesa to see about getting it fixed then I went to Madge’s and gave her a permanent. She is making some really cute quilts for her girls. We quilted for awhile and enjoyed our time together. I enjoyed being with her. She always had some interesting project going.

21 Oct 1981

The most interesting thing that happened today was that Jay came for lunch. It’s always so good to have him come. Everything always seems better after he has been here.

22 Oct 1981

Today was Library day. It was rather slow at the Library. Our replacement was late coming so it was late when I got home. Had some supper, read the paper and went to bed.
