Most of the Carpenters are of a quiet, unassuming, uncomplaining disposition - always ready to support any good work.

Interesting to note a common virtue among the men in the family - always showing kindness and thoughtful concern to their companions and children.

Ora Carpenter Omerza journal, April 9-22, 1981

9 April 1981

Jay came for lunch today. It is the highlight of the week when he can come to lunch. I went to the Library in the afternoon.

10 April 1981

Bertha came to Mesa today. She will come here tomorrow. Did a little housecleaning and mowed the lawn.

11 April 1981
Bertha came this afternoon. It’s so good to have her here. She will stay about two weeks. Florence and Joe will be in Texas all next week. They are helping Joe’s sister move to Mesa, so Bertha gets to stay with me for which I am very grateful.

12 April 1981

I gave my Relief Society lesson today on “A Book of Remembrance.” I felt that it went well. In the afternoon Madge and John and children came and visited awhile. I was glad that Bertha could visit with them and sort or get acquainted with the children.

13 April 1981

Bertha and I went shopping this morning. We were both looking for shoes. I found three pairs I liked and bought them all. What a splurge! I decided since I could get them on sale that day I might as well take them since the price would probably be doubled next year. Inflation is running rampant. Bertha got one pair. We had a good day. I hadn’t been shopping for months.

14 April 1981

Today is Jay’s birthday. Marlene planned a birthday party for him in the park. It was so nice. We had a delicious spaghetti dinner with birthday cake and ice cream. It was a beautiful evening. The children had fun on the play grounds and the grown ups visited. The whole family was there. It was so much fun.

15 April 1981

Today is John’s birthday. Bertha, Gladys Beals, and I went to the Temple. We went to two sessions and then had lunch in the Temple cafeteria. Afterwards we took a tour of the new visitor’s center. It is so beautiful. We enjoyed the day.

16 April 1981

Jay came for lunch today. Went to the library in the afternoon. Bertha came with me. It was a routine afternoon. We are getting a few more people in now. Many of them are non members.

17 April 1981

Nancy came this morning and we did her hair. We enjoyed her and the children. They are so cute. In the evening we were invited to attend the Easter Pageant in Mesa with John and Madge. The pageant is held on the Temple grounds. I have wanted to see it for years but it draws such a crowd that Em was never up to it. John has reserved seats also reserved parking. We parked close by and had good seats. It was magnificent, the only way I can describe it. The lighting, the sound, the costumes, everything was just wonderful. A lovely evening. we enjoyed it so much.

18 April 1981

This morning discovered someone had stolen the battery out of Bertha’s car while we were gone last night. Very upsetting. Called Jay, he advised us to call police. They said insurance would pay for it and to give name of policeman.

19 April 1981

Today is Sunday. We went to our meetings, and spent a quiet afternoon at home.

21 April 1981

Bertha and I went to the Temple this morning. We went to two sessions. Then went to visit Uncle Less Carpenter (Lester Carpenter, Frank’s brother). On the first day of May he will be 93 years old. He isn’t very well. He had good and bad days. He did know who we were but didn’t do much talking. We had a good visit with him and Aunt Lizzie (Elizabeth Fuller Carpenter).

22 April 1981

Jay came for lunch today and brought a battery for Bertha’s car. He installed the battery and then Bertha left in the afternoon for Mesa. She will stay with Florence tonight and leave for Thatcher, Thursday. I hated to see her go. We had such a good visit. It will be lonesome without her. She hated to go. We had word on Tuesday that the Thatcher Church burned Monday night. It was a real blow to her and she said she hated to go home and see it.
