Most of the Carpenters are of a quiet, unassuming, uncomplaining disposition - always ready to support any good work.

Interesting to note a common virtue among the men in the family - always showing kindness and thoughtful concern to their companions and children.

Ora Carpenter Omerza journal May 19-23, 1980

19 May 1980

Em went into the Hospital today. All went well. He seemed calm and went along with the routine of the Hospital. I’m so grateful for the Priesthood blessing he received.

20 May 1980

Today is Afton’s birthday.

Went to the Hospital to see Em. They are giving him a lot of tests. Doesn’t look like the operation will be for a few days.

22 May 1980

Doctor asked me to come in so we could discuss Em’s case. The Doctor said the arteries to his legs are blocked and he suggests a by pass to let the blood flow more freely to his legs and feet. It was quite a shock. He went in for a Hernia operation. We had no idea of this. The Doctor explained what would happen. Explained what could happened if they didn’t operate. He had a small aneurysm on one artery which could break. However he said it could go on for years. If it breaks we are in an emergency situation. The artery in the other leg is almost closed off. If it closes completely then the leg has no blood and we are in an emergency again. We thought it over and decided the best thing is to have the operation. He isn’t in the best condition for an operation. They want him to stay in the Hospital as the Doctor can’t operate until next week. The Doctor doesn’t say much about the hernia. We might have to let it go for now. I was very upset. Jay visited with him in the evening.

Today was our Carpenter reunion in Mesa. Em wanted me to go so I visited with him awhile then went to Mesa. We had a good turn out. It was good to see all the family members. The three remaining sons of Grandpa Carpenter were all there. Uncle John 96. Uncle Less 92 and Uncle Ray 79.

They held a business meeting. Had a program and served lunch. Bertha came over. It was good to see her. Also got to see all of Larry and Carol’s children. There are four and they are so cute. Coy and Kathy were there with only one of theirs. He is so cute. He looks just like Coy when he was a baby. Joan Carpenter Cole was there with her little Kevin also David’s wife Chris and their baby. After the reunion I went to Florences and visited with her and Bertha. Bertha was going home the next day. Larry and family were going to be there for a few days.

In the late afternoon I went in to see Em and Jay and Ted came and visited with him. He appreciated it.
