Most of the Carpenters are of a quiet, unassuming, uncomplaining disposition - always ready to support any good work.

Interesting to note a common virtue among the men in the family - always showing kindness and thoughtful concern to their companions and children.

Ora Carpenter Omerza journal Feb 10-14, 1980

There are two Feb 10th entries. It isn't a mistake. It appears that she wrote the first one between church meetings (before the days of the three hour block schedule), and then thought she ought to add another entry after the evening Sacrament Meeting due to the organizational changes.

10 Feb 1980

Today is Sunday. Went to Sunday School. While I was washing the dinner dishes I looked out the kitchen window and saw the neighbor chickens in my garden. I went out to shoo them away and found they had eaten nearly all my lettuce. You can’t win.

10 Feb 1980

On Sunday evening we had a change in one of the counselors in the Bishopric. Lester Bartlett was released and Richard Jones put in. Brother Bartlett was made a ward missionary. Gary Hekner was released as the Sunday School President and Kevin Hill replaced him.

11 Feb 1980

Monday, a routine day. Washing, cleaning. Prepared food for Robert Dean and his wife. They are both in poor health.

12 Feb 1980

Today is Nikki’s birthday. Eleven years old. It seems that only yesterday she was a tiny baby. Now she is a beautiful young lady.

I met Bertha at the Temple. We went to two sessions. It’s always nice to go to the Temple with her. We visited afterward awhile and then I came home and she went to Florences, as she had an appointment in Mesa the next day to get her eyes tested for glasses.

Had a good meeting at Relief Society today. It was raining when we came out. In the afternoon Em and I went to the market in the rain. I hate getting wet. In the evening Bobbie Gibbons mutual class came over and brought us a Valentine and a beautiful heart shaped cake all decorated with flowers, etc. It was so thoughtful of them. We enjoyed their visit.

14 Feb 1980

Forty four years ago today that Em and I met. It certainly wasn’t love at first sight but over the years that has changed. He has given me a valentine every year since. Went to the Genealogical Library in the afternoon. It had been raining off and on all day. In the evening we got a report the rain had been so heavy on the water shed to the north that they were releasing more water in the river. By 10 p.m. we got a report that one of the Dams on the river was weak and might break. In order to keep the water from flowing over the top which would cause the break, they had to release 170,000 cubic inches per second. This is more water than had ever been down the river. Many people would be flooded out of their homes. All the river crossing were washed out except Central Ave and Mill Ave. We were told to stay off the streets. Especially keep away from the river. Keep alert and keep a radio or T.V. on to know what was happening. It was a long wet night but by morning the river had crested. There was more water going out of the dams than going in. Engineers came from Colorado to look at the weak dam and said it was ok if the water didn’t go over the top. Everything seemed better. However there was a new storm coming in from the west coast. If it brought a lot of rain there was still danger.
