Most of the Carpenters are of a quiet, unassuming, uncomplaining disposition - always ready to support any good work.

Interesting to note a common virtue among the men in the family - always showing kindness and thoughtful concern to their companions and children.

Ora Carpenter Omerza journal Jan 10, 1980

10 Jan 1980

It’s been over a month since I have written. A lot of things happened in the month of Dec. I just didn’t get them written down.

Bertha came over on the 8th with ward members to go to the Temple I didn’t get to see her but talked on the phone.

Sunday evening, the 9th our door bell rang. When we went to the door there was no one there but a little gift on the step. There was a note which read “On the first day of Christmas the little elves brought you a little bell” and it was signed “The Elves.” Sure enough in the package was a little bell. From then on every night for twelve nights the elves came bringing a little gift. We tried to catch them but they always got away. We caught them several times running across the lawn or down the street. It was so much fun. Em even enjoyed it and tried to catch them. We made little treats and put out on the step for them. Then on the 12th night the door bell rang and we heard singing and when we opened the door there was the Jay Aposhian family. They sang the Twelve Days of Christmas for us gave us a plate of twelve cookies and wished us a Merry Christmas. We enjoyed the Elves so much.

The week before Christmas I felt like I was getting a cold so I took my usual cold remedy. But it didn’t work. It was the flu instead of a cold. Nothing I did stopped it and I felt terrible. Madge was having a dinner for the adult members of the family on Saturday before Christmas but she was having trouble with her back and the Doctor said she should stay off her feet. Jay was in bed with pneumonia and Dad was coming down with the flu so Madge called the dinner off. We were all going to have dinner here on Christmas Day but since there was so much sickness we all had Christmas at our separate homes. By New Years Day we had all recovered and all the family came here for a get together. We had such an enjoyable time. I love to be with my children and their mates and children.

Friday, the 28th of Dec., was Paul’s birthday. Two years old. He is such a cute little boy. He doesn’t talk too much but he is quite understandable.

We are ten days into the new year. We had a little rain yesterday and today. It has been a very dry year. We had rain and floods in the spring but no rain to speak of for the rest of the year.
