Most of the Carpenters are of a quiet, unassuming, uncomplaining disposition - always ready to support any good work.

Interesting to note a common virtue among the men in the family - always showing kindness and thoughtful concern to their companions and children.

Ora Carpenter Omerza history, 14th installment

In 1961 Jay was called on a mission to Brazil. Em was very willing to have him go and supported him. It was so hard to let him go so far away but he went and fulfilled an honorable mission. He was gone 2 ½ years.

Em was a hard worker. He worked for J.H. Welsh and Sons Contracting Co. for about 25 years.

In January of 1956 he suffered a heart attack. This was a real blow to him. He had enjoyed good health most of his life. He was in the hospital three weeks but he never did regain his full strength. He did go back to his work and worked several more years. But he always had heart problems and in 1975 the doctor wanted to operate and do a Coronary Bypass. He took medication for some time to see if it would help but finally the doctor said the surgery was the only thing to do so, in January 1975 he had a double coronary bypass. The surgery went well. He was up and about in about 2 weeks but there were a lot of problems that went along with it. He was in so much pain and was unable to take any kind of pain medication. The depression set in. It was awful. The doctors didn’t know what to do for him so they just gave him tranquilizers. Then there was the problem of getting him off the tranquilizers. It was a hard time. He was unable to do anything with his hands so time was heavy on him.

He never liked to talk about spiritual things but the last year of his life many times in desperation he would ask me to pray with him. We had many close moments.

He developed a hernia and when they were operating on it they found he had cancer. It had gone to his liver so there wasn’t much they could do for him. This was in July and on the following January 10, 1981 he passed away in his sleep. It was hard for me but all in all we had a good life together and I miss him so much. He was buried in East Resthaven Cemetery in Phoenix.
