20 Jan 1982
It’s been two months since I have written. Many interesting things have happened but I just neglected to get them written down.
Thanksgiving came on the 26th of November this year. All my children had planned to go to their mates homes for Thanksgiving. They had all invited me to go with them. I finally went with Jay and Marlene to her folks home. Two of Marlene’s sisters were there also. Sheila and her family and Donna. I enjoyed the day very much. We had a delicious dinner. Turkey and ham and all the trimmings. It was nice visiting with Marlene’s family.
The 3rd of Dec. came and went (my wedding anniversary). It was a sad day in a way. I did a lot of thinking back 43 years. The 6th of Dec. was a happy day. Our new little granddaughter, Jessica Marie, was blessed by her father. She received a beautiful blessing. One part I remember was that he blessed her that she would help her Knapple Grandparents to come into the church. What a mission for a sweet little girl. I was so proud of Ted as he gave the blessing. That same day I went to the blessing of Marilyn Hall’s baby boy. Bertha was over and Marilyn’s Sacrament meeting was early. We went with Florence and Joe. Then we went to Florence’s Relief Society Meeting and then to Ted and Nancy’s Sacrament meeting. After the meeting we went to the house and had dinner with Ted and Nancy and children. It was a long day but a very special and enjoyable one. The next day on the 7th, Afton called and wanted Bertha and me to go to his house for dinner. Since the next day was Bertha and also Lorna’s birthday, they had a little birthday party. Lisa had a good dinner cooked and Jetaun made a very delicious birthday cake. We spent a most enjoyable evening.
The next day being Bertha’s birthday we went to the Temple and met Florence there, then picked up Hazel and went to lunch for a birthday celebration.
December always brings parties and socials. I couldn’t help but think back on last year Christmas. Em was so sick and yet he wanted everyone to enjoy Christmas. This year I felt so alone without him. The ward had a lovely Christmas dinner and social. I went and had an enjoyable time but on the way home the most lonely feeling came over me. I went to bed as soon as I got home and tried to think of the good evening I had had, but I was still alone.
The 12 & 13 year old girls in mutual gave a Christmas party for all the single adults over 40 years old. It was a lovely party and they gave us all a gift.
Madge wanted to have a dinner for the adults in our family. Because she was expecting soon after Christmas I felt it would be too much for her but she wanted me to come stay a few days with them and help with the dinner. We had the dinner on the 23rd and it turned out to be a beautiful evening. Madge has a lovely home and we all felt very elegant at dinner. The dinner was delicious and the conversation was good. Jay and Marlene, Ted and Nancy, John and Madge and myself. It’s always good to be with your children. The house was decorated and the tree so beautiful.
The next day I helped Madge with a few last minute preparations. In the evening (Christmas Eve) I went with them to a Thomas get together. It was an interesting evening. The Thomases have then children and 36 grandchildren. They were all there but one daughter and her husband. They had a dinner and a program and Santa came and gave the children toys. After we left there we went to a home where John and Madge and the children were playing Santa. They all took their gifts to the door, rang the doorbell and ran. They were all in the car across the street when the people answered the door. They watched them take the gifts in. The children were so excited. I thought it was a really nice thing for them to do and the children seemed to enjoy it so much. Then we went home and everyone to bed but the excitement was pretty high. They weren’t to open any presents until everyone was there the next morning and of course John delayed his getting there to keep the suspense up a little longer. But when he did make his appearance the excitement was high. It has been a long time since I had been with children on Christmas morning. I really enjoyed it. In the afternoon, Ted and Jay and families came and we ate and enjoyed each other’s company. My Christmas was much better than I had thought it would be. My beautiful children always have my best interest at heart. I came home the day after Christmas. The next week was a busy one. I had two days at the Library for some instruction. The week seemed so busy. Jay had invited me to spend New Year’s Eve with them but it seemed better for me to stay home. A little after midnight when I was about to retire the phone rang and it was John. He said they were at the hospital and Madge wanted to talk to me. She said, “You have a new granddaughter.” I couldn’t believe it! She wasn’t due until Jan 20th. But believe it or not there she was 7lbs. 2 oz. a beautiful little girl. Mother and daughter doing fine. She was born eight minutes after 12 midnight making her the first baby born in 1982 at Desert Samaritan Hospital and the first one in Mesa. We were all pretty excited about the whole thing. The next day they came and took pictures of the parents and baby. A big spread in the paper. They named her Melanie. I went to see her in the afternoon. Madge said John could care for the children over the week end and she would go home on Sunday and I planned to stay with them for a few days. The baby developed jaundice and had to be taken in for tests everyday for a week. They had to put her in the hospital for two days. It was pretty upsetting for Madge, but she weathered it through and the baby came home. I had a Relief Society Seminar on the 8th of Jan. So I came home to go to that. It was held in the afternoon. When I got home about 6:30 p.m. Bertha called, she was in Mesa with Florence, and said she and Florence and Joe, Ivan and Hazel, and Afton and Lorna wanted to come see me. So they came and brought popcorn to pop. Afton brought his new popper he had received for Christmas. It was great having them all here. It was a very pleasant evening. Bertha came over the next day and stayed until Thursday.
I helped Madge two days a week for awhile. With her large family there is so much to do. She is gaining her strength.
While Bertha was here we went to the Temple. We were asked to do initiatory work. We did 30 names and then did an endowment.
On the 23rd of Jan. I went with Reid and his family to the Temple where Jo Ann received her endowments. It was nice being with them. Ivan and Hazel were there and after the Temple session we all went to lunch. I don’t see Reed and Ruth too often so it was good visiting with them.
